In Grand-Bassam, Côte d'Ivoire, a jihadist attack occurred in 2016 that claimed the lives of 19 people, including numerous European citizens. The trial of several suspects in that attack began on Wednesday in Abidjan.  A journalist from AFP observed that the trial was scheduled to begin before the Criminal Court (Court of Assizes) of Abidjan at 13:00 (local and GMT), around which numerous security personnel had been stationed in the morning. The Grand Bassam assault, which was claimed by al-Qaeda, highlighted the worry that existed in 2016 about jihadist violence spreading from the Sahel to the nations of the Gulf of Guinea. On March 13, 2016, three teenage assailants attacked multiple hotels and restaurants in Grand-Bassam, a tourist destination close to Abidjan, firing Kalashnikovs at diners on the terrace before being subdued by Ivorian police personnel.
